Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been conducting "geoscientific study" and "research and development on geological disposal" in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) for safe geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Geochemical parameters of groundwater pressure, pH, and oxidation-reduction potential in the deep groundwater has been continuously monitored with monitoring systems which were developed in the Horonobe URL Project. This report presents the physico-chemical parameters of groundwater which have been obtained by the monitoring systems installed at the 140 m, 250 m and 350 m gallery. The data obtained until March 31, 2017 was summarized along with related information such as the specifications of boreholes and the excavation of the URL.

Development of the monitoring technique for hydro-geochemical conditions of groundwater in low permeable sedimentary rocks with high content of dissolved gases in the underground facility is one of key issues in the Underground Research Laboratory (URL) project in order to obtain the reliable geochemical data. Development of the monitoring system for the groundwater geochemistry was conducted previously at the 140m gallery in the Horonobe URL. Thereafter, improvement and development of the monitoring system have been performed at the 350m gallery as the course of development technology to monitor the hydro-geochemical conditions during the URL construction. In this report, the results including the improvement and development of the monitoring system for the groundwater geochemistry at the 350m gallery and the several examples of data acquisition are presented.

JAERI-Tech 2004-054, 72 Pages, 2004/08

JAERI-Tech-2004-054.pdf:7.3MB

A standard is provided for the radiation monitor based on LAN (Local Area Network) and PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) technology at the introduction to the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The monitor consists of radiation measurement equipments and the central monitoring panel. The formers are installed in the radiation field, and the latter is installed in the control room and composed of PLC, which are connected with LAN. Extension of the existing standard and the conformity to the international standard were thought as important in providing the standard. The standard is expected to improve the compatibility, maintenancability and productivity of the components.

This report describes research activities of the R & D Group for Non-Proliferation Technology related to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) verification regime. The main subjects of this report are (1) an overview of the CTBT verification regime, (2) preparation of the National Data Center for radionuclide data, (3) construction and operation of the radionuclide monitoring stations at Takasaki and Okinawa and the certified rarionuclide laboratory at Tokai in Japan. We have participated in an intercomparison test internationally organized for the certified laboratories and the test results are given here. Scientific application of the CTBT-related technologies to environmental researches is also depicted.

The Combination of neural networks and an expert system for on-line nuclear power plant monitoring

Nabeshima, Kunihiko; Ayaz, E.*; Seker, S.*; Barutcu, B.*; T$"u$rkcan, E.*

Proceedings of International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and the International Conference on Neural Information Processing (ICANN/ICONIP 2003), p.406 - 409, 2003/06

On-line plant monitoring system with neural networks and an expert system has been developed for Borssele Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the Netherlands. The feedforward and the recurrent neural networks are utilized for plant modeling and anomaly detection. The rule-based expert system is applied for plant diagnosis with the outputs of the neural networks. The off-line results showed that the neural network could model the plant dynamics precisely. The on-line results indicated that the monitoring system could sufficiently diagnose the plant status in real time.

Description is given for the characteristic radiation environment for the High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility and the design concept of the radiation control system of it. The facility is a large scale accelerator complex consisting of high energy proton accelerators carrying the highest beam intensity in the world and the related experimental facilities and therefore provides various issues relevant to the radiation environment. The present report describes the specifications for the radiation control system for the facility, determined in consideration of these characteristics.

Nuclear reactor monitoring with the combination of neural network and expert system

This study presents a hybrid monitoring system for nuclear reactor utilizing neural networks and a rule-based real-time expert system. The whole monitoring system including a data acquisition system and the advisory displays has been tested by an on-line simulator of pressurized water reactor. From the testing results, it was shown that the neural network in the monitoring system successfully modeled the plant dynamics and detected the symptoms of anomalies earlier than the conventional alarm system. The real-time expert system also worked satisfactorily in diagnosing and displaying the system status by using the outputs of neural networks and a priori knowledge base.

Prevention measures for avoiding unexpected drifting of marine component in recovery equipment of significant metals from sea water; Positioning and monitoring system for marine component and improvement of its positioning accuracy

Tamada, Masao; Kasai, Noboru; Seko, Noriaki; Hasegawa, Shin; Kawabata, Yukiya*; Onuma, Kenji*; Takeda, Hayato*; Katakai, Akio; Sugo, Takanobu

JAERI-Tech-2001-065.pdf:5.24MB

Positioning and monitoring system for marine component in recovery equipment of significant metals from seawater by using adsorbent was designed and assembled to avoid unexpected accidents. This system which was set on float part of the marine component obtains the position data by means of GPS satellites and send them to Takasaki and Mutsu establishments through satellite communication. As characteristic test for 20 days in the real sea, 256 data were obtained every 2 hours. The wrong data was eight and the positioning accuracy was 200.7m. To improve these characteristics, two new functions were added to the present firmware. These are to raise positioning resolutions in longitude and latitude from 0.001 to 0.00001 degree and to average remaining three data of positioning after maximum and minimum data were removed from continuous five times positioning. The improved system shows no wrong datum, average positioning of 6.74m. This performance is enough to prevent marine equipment from its drifting accident.
